Toy – A Bridging Tool in Parenting

By Megha Lakhania, Madhuri K V, Caran, Hariesh K Sankaran Introduction and Gist of the Panel Discussion: The Ahmedabad design week 2021 proposes to explore the toy-play from the parents' perspective and how toys act as a bridging tool in parenting. Children learn by playing, and toys are the instruments that allow them to discover the world they live in. The panel will focus on the factors that influence parents' toy purchases. It will further explore how toys enhance the betterment of abilities and skills to improve children's communication with their parents. The panel also focuses on growing their sense of accountability and increasing their perception of happiness.

Megha Lakhani

Megha Lakhani is a graduate of the prestigious National Institute of Design. She is an award-winning independent filmmaker, and her movies have been screened in various film festivals globally. She has a four-year-old child, and she is bringing him up in an environment that sparks his creativity. She encourages him and his friends to use their creative energy while playing with toys or interacting with things at home or outside. She brings her keen aesthetic sense to everything that she does.

Madhuri K V

With over a decade of experience in diverse areas of design — Toys, Games, Lifestyle products & User Experience, Madhuri loves to explore various facets of design. As a Design Head at the start-up Flinto Learning Solutions, she was instrumental in creating a strong design foundation for their brands Flintobox and Flintoclass. Prior to that, she designed mobility products and bicycles for children with India’s leading bicycle manufacturer, TI Cycles. She currently works as an Experience Design Consultant at Infosys to innovate their digital design experiences. She’s an alumnus of Toy and Game Design from the National Institute of Design.

Caran Thammaiah

Caran is an alumnus of the National Institute of Design with a specialization in Product Design. With more than a decade of experience in Design,  he has worked extensively in designing bicycles for children & other consumer categories at TI Cycles of India. He’s also worked on the branding of children’s products at Flinto Learning Solutions. He currently works as a Chief Design Consultant at his firm ‘Two People Company’ specializing in Branding, Strategy & Digital Product Design.

Mr Hariesh K. Sankaran

Hariesh K. Sankaran is an architect and designer with experience in the fields of architecture, product design, furniture, urban landscapes, and strategic design. He has collaborated with various firms and brands like Louis Vuitton, Dietiker, Swarovski, Sunstar, Mizar, Vietri, Paolo Pecora, Multiplicity lab, DARC, ALAD, etc., spanning France, Switzerland, Japan, Italy, USA, UK, Austria, and the Indian subcontinent working on varied projects ranging from furniture, lighting, packaging, retail, lifestyle accessories, interiors, architecture, and urban planning. He has also been involved as a design consultant for the World Expo 2015, Milan, and the master plan of the new capital complex of Abu Dhabi.

After completing his undergraduate degree from India, Hariesh pursued his masters’ degree in Industrial Design from Domus Academy, Italy. Furthering his interest in architecture he pursued a master’s degree in Architecture, specializing in urban landscapes from the Politecnico di Milano. He is an award-winning designer with his works and products exhibited at the Light+Building design expo ’06 (Frankfurt), Korean Design Expo ’06, Salone del Mobile ’07 (Italy), Opus design awards ’07 (Japan), and IBDC ’05 (Taiwan).
